Inflation rate surges to 19.7 per cent despite tightening of money supply by Central Bank of Kenya

According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), food and non-alcoholic drinks’ index went up by 1.35 per cent between October and November 2011 as a result of price increases observed in respect of a number of food products such as beef, bread, potatoes, chicken, wheat flour and sugar.

Rice farmers in Siaya adopts unique ways to store rice and avoid post harvest losses

Rice farmers in Yala swamp in Siaya have cut their losses of rice to post-harvest damage by as much as 40 per cent, by using candles to create an airless vacumn for storing the rice seeds for their next crops.

The farmers are also using candle smoke as an ongoing deterrent to pest invasion of stored crops.
